Michael Citron, MD, is a functional medicine specialist who’s also board-certified in emergency medicine practicing at FoundationMED, located in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Dr. Citron has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and is committed to helping patients address the underlying conditions that impact their health.
Dr. Citron earned his medical degree and a Master of Science degree in immunology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati. Dr. Citron has completed fellowship training from The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and is currently finishing additional rigorous fellowship training at the Institute for Functional Medicine. Further, he has completed specialized training in methylation with Dr. Ben Lynch and has attended every SHEICON methylation conference.
Dr. Citron believes there’s more to treating illness than symptom reduction with the dispensing of medication. While providing critical emergency medical care, he discovered a consistent pattern of chronic underlying issues leading to emergency department visits. For example, many patients used tobacco products, were overweight, or had uncontrolled chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). If these patients were empowered to improve their health, they could have prevented the need for emergency care.
Dr. Citron began to explore how physicians might do better at preventing the need for visits to the emergency room and discovered functional medicine. Now, he focuses his practice on identifying and then eliminating or minimizing the root causes that eventually lead to health problems and the need for reactive health care.
