Brain Maker ** Must Read ** - Explains the Gut-Brain connection

"The single most important medical innovation in the 21st century is making the link between the gut and the little bugs that live there and nearly every chronic disease - from autism to depression, from asthma to autoimmune disease, from diabetes to dementia. Brain Maker is a game changer. For the first time, this brilliant scientist doctor connects the dots and teaches us why we need to tend our inner garden (our microbiome) and provides a radical but simple plan to reset, reboot, and renew your microbiome. This book shouldn't be called Brain Maker, it should be called Health Maker."—Mark Hyman, MD.

The ART of Fermentation

Winner of the 2013 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Reference and Scholarship, and a New York Times bestseller, The Art of Fermentation is the most comprehensive guide to do-it-yourself home fermentation ever published. Sandor Katz presents the concepts and processes behind fermentation in ways that are simple enough to guide a reader through their first experience making sauerkraut or yogurt, and in-depth enough to provide greater understanding and insight for experienced practitioners.
While Katz expertly contextualizes fermentation in terms of biological and cultural evolution, health and nutrition, and even economics, this is primarily a compendium of practical information―how the processes work; parameters for safety; techniques for effective preservation; troubleshooting; and more.
With two-color illustrations and extended resources, this book provides essential wisdom for cooks, homesteaders, farmers, gleaners, foragers, and food lovers of any kind who want to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for arguably the oldest form of food preservation, and part of the roots of culture itself.
In Defense of Food ** Must Read **

Food. There’s plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Why write "In Defense of Food"?

Because most of what we’re consuming today is not food, and how we’re consuming it — in the car, in front of the TV, and increasingly alone — is not really eating. Instead of food, we’re consuming “edible foodlike substances” — no longer the products of nature but of food science. Many of them come packaged with health claims that should be our first clue they are anything but healthy. In the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become.
The Adrenal Reset Diet ** Must Read PARTICULARLY if you have Adrenal Issues **

Aglaee has created a truly impressive book on the interrelations of nutrition and gut health. If you are interested in learning much more about the gut, and dietary methods to approach gut issues (i.e. FODMAPS, Elimination Diets, Nightshades, SCD and many others) than this book belongs on your shelf.

Beyond simply managing your symptoms, Digestive Health with REAL Food will teach you how to address the root causes of your digestive troubles to achieve optimal digestive and overall health."
Nourishing Traditions - Great Reference Book

Rather than jumping on the bandwagon of vegetarianism, non-fat dieting, soy mania, or any of the other eating fads that currently inform our sense of "proper nutrition," this book looks to tradition, to the foods that have provided us with sustenance and strength for centuries, as the basis of a nutritious and health-conscious diet.

This is a GREAT book to have as a reference for those interested in maximizing the healthy aspects of their diet. Within is information on fermentation, soaking of grains, and many other "old time" food preparation methods seemingly lost today but so very important to implement as you move towards optimized health.
Epi-Paleo Rx ** Goes Deep! **

So… you think you know all about the underlying biochemical relationships that keep us young and healthy? Well - I have a challenge for you!

Dr. Jack Kruse is a neurosurgeon and functional medicine practitioner who has "gone deep" into understanding the relationships that biochemically keep us well or lead to chronic disease. He takes the reader through his prescriptions for ideal health using examples such as osteoporosis, autoimmunity, brain health, aging, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and others. By utilizing "biohacking" (i.e. understanding and correcting underlying metabolic disharmony) he educates on how to optimize your underlying metabolism by paying attention to proper nutrition, circadian rhythms and not working against your genetics.

This is a very good book and leads to deeper understanding of the underlying complexities of interrelated systems as well as how to improve them. Highly recommended but not a casual read by any means!
Perfect Health Diet - Very Interesting Reading

Perfect Health Diet is more than a way of eating. It shows how to optimize your lifestyle and eliminate the causes of disease for a lifetime of great health.

This is a great book to help understand the underpinnings of the Paleo Diet concept. It represents a variation of Paleo that I consider interesting - particularly the concept of safe starches.
Escape The Diet Trap - Great Information

Dr. Briffa, an award-winning MD and authority on diet and weight loss, shows how conventional advice - eat less and exercise more - actually causes the body to resist weight loss and dooms us to failure.

Offering a science based and sustainable approach to weight loss that works WITH the body, not against it, Escape the Diet Trap reveals how to achieve lasting, sustainable weight control without calorie counting, extensive exercise, or hunger!

Dr. Briffa also writes a great Blog that I recommend you check out…
The Paleo Answer - Where it all started!

Dr. Cordain is the big cheese - the main guy - the big cahuna of the Paleo Diet (note - NOT the Paleo Template modification that FoundationMED promulgates). His book is important in order to appreciate the very core concepts of why we recommend Paleo in the conceptual sense.

Dr. Loren Cordains’ bestselling The Paleo Diet and The Paleo Diet Cookbook show that by following the diet humans were genetically designed to eat: meats, fish, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and other foods that mimic the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors, we can achieve a greater level of health

Written by Dr. Loren Cordain, the world's leading expert on Paleolithic eating styles internationally regarded as the father of Paleo
Omnivore’s Dilemma - A truly startling read about our very food supply - you won’t regret reading this titillating book!

In this groundbreaking book, one of America’s most fascinating, original, and elegant writers turns his own omnivorous mind to the seemingly straightforward question of what we should have for dinner.

To find out, Pollan follows each of the food chains that sustain us—industrial food, organic or alternative food, and food we forage ourselves—from the source to a final meal, and in the process develops a definitive account of the American way of eating.

His absorbing narrative takes us from Iowa cornfields to food-science laboratories, from feedlots and fast-food restaurants to organic farms and hunting grounds, always emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the handful of plant and animal species we depend on.

Each time Pollan sits down to a meal, he deploys his unique blend of personal and investigative journalism to trace the origins of everything consumed, revealing what we unwittingly ingest and explaining how our taste for particular foods and flavors reflects our evolutionary inheritance.
Toxic Fat - An Interesting Look at Biochemistry and Health

“Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad,” the most revolutionary book that Dr. Sears has written.

Rather than looking at obesity as a condition of sloth and gluttony, Dr. Sears shows it is much more productive to think of obesity as a form of cancer that is driven by silent inflammation. Furthermore, the epidemics of weight gain and diabetes in America are primarily caused because the genes in susceptible individuals are being activated by recent changes in the American diet. Once those genes are turned on, obesity and diabetes are the inevitable outcome. The cause of those genes being turned on is the rapid increase of arachidonic acid (i.e., toxic fat) in our bodies.

In “Toxic Fat,” you will learn why people who have a genetic predisposition for a “fat trap” are becoming fatter not due to moral inferiority, but simply by having bad genes that can be activated by toxic fat. Also the driving force for eating more calories is not improved food advertising, but hormonal changes in the brain (again caused by increased levels of toxic fat) that are creating a constant state of hunger.

If there is a must-read book about obesity and diabetes in America, then “Toxic Fat” is that book.
